Substantive Post 26.4 hours per week

GP Scale - Salary Range £80,721 - £120,344 per annum (pro-rata)

(inc of 2% local supplement)

Plus Distant Island Allowance of £2,380 per annum (pro-rata)

A Relocation allowance of up to £8,000 is also available

Come and join us at Scalloway Surgery in Shetland where we have a vacancy for a GP to join our happy team.

We are fortunate still to enjoy the working conditions that make General Practice rewarding. We are a small practice (3700 patients) in the heart of our community where there is a strong sense of belonging. Our whole team are professionally committed to the patients we also know as friends, relatives and fellow community members. There is plenty of space for human connection. Patients enjoy straightforward access to the surgery, with same day appointments always available, they readily show their appreciation to the team! There is the meaningful possibility of continuity of care, from birth to the end of life. We work alongside excellent community nurses to manage the care of our housebound patients and provide palliative care. We are well supported in practice by a committed admin team and by allied health professionals including a clinical pharmacist, first contact physiotherapist and advanced nurse practitioners who manage much of the minor and acute illness in the practice. We have three nurses and two health care support workers who know their patients well. We have robust systems in place to provide proactive, patient-centred care with attention to quality. We meet at the start of every day for a morning huddle to share updates about patients, and important practice news. And we share time for a coffee break to connect socially with our team.

Whilst we are a rural practice, we have access to secondary care at the Gilbert Bain hospital only 10 minutes away. Our consultant colleagues are hands-on, approachable and friendly, with a collaborative approach to the patients whose care we share. For those with an interest in service development, there are ample opportunities for being involved in Shetland-wide collaborations focussed on quality improvement, and in continuous professional development.

Although geographically remote from the UK mainland, remoteness is just a matter of perspective. Shetlanders see ourselves as being at the heart of things! Shetland is a welcoming and safe place for families. Educational facilities are excellent, with well resourced primary schools, local junior high schools and a large, thriving high school in Lerwick. Recreational facilities are accessible and of high quality. Scalloway has its own swimming pool and gym. Cultural life and sporting life is rich with opportunities. Shetlands lively musical heritage is renowned worldwide. And on top of that, there is all that the outdoors has to offer; from beautiful beaches, wonderful walks, amazing wildlife, to wild weather and still winter nights when the mirrie dancers (the aurora borealis) light the sky.
